Yamilet del Carmen is a passionate advocate for education, an entrepreneur, and a philanthropist. Born and raised in a disadvantaged area of Venezuela, she pursued an industrial engineering degree before moving to the United States in 1999 as an international student to further her education. Determined to succeed despite the challenges, she explored various colleges and universities before finding her academic home at the Community College of Philadelphia (CCP).
At CCP, Yamilet excelled as a student leader, serving as a Student Ambassador, Spanish Tutor, Chair of the AAUW Scholarship Committee, and Secretary of the International Students Association. Her dedication and academic excellence earned her a place on the All-Pennsylvania Academic Team of Phi Theta Kappa, securing a scholarship to continue her studies. She later graduated with a degree in Business from West Chester University.
After completing her education, Yamilet and her husband successfully ran a restaurant in Philadelphia.Committed to maintaining a strong relationship with CCP, she hired fellow alumni as waitstaff and kitchen employees. She took a catering class at CCP, deepening her expertise in the hospitality industry. In recognition of her continued involvement and exceptional achievements, she received the Outstanding Alumni Award from CCP.
Recognizing the importance of communication, she attended the University of Pennsylvania’s International Business Communication Program, where she developed skills in cross-cultural communication and global business strategies.
Understanding the barriers faced by underserved youth, Yamilet founded the Del Carmen Foundation in 2022. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for children and youth in Philadelphia and Venezuela. Last year, the foundation provided financial aid to six low-income students in Philadelphia and impacted the lives of nearly 1,000 children in Venezuela.
Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience, education, and giving back. She firmly believes that "Where persistence meets optimism, transformation begins in your life." Through her work, she continues to create pathways of hope and learning for future generations, inspiring others to believe that with determination and perseverance, anything is possible.
Her message to students—both international and American—seeking an education that truly prepares them for the future is to consider the Community College of Philadelphia. She also encourages CCP alumni to stay connected—whether by continuing their education or giving back to students in need—helping build a stronger Philadelphia!
